During the week of April 5th 2010, Montgomery was the proud host for more than 1,000 Hyundai dealers and representatives arriving for the company's annual dealer meeting.  Hyundai selected Montgomery not for the pastimes it provides but because the company's U.S. manufacturing arm is here. The company is clearly trying to send a message this is no fun-in-the-sun junket. It is time to work.  According the the information posted on the Hyundai Website, "This will not be your typical dealer meeting.  This will be a sleeves-rolled-up, activity-packed dive into the heart of Hyundai in America. You'll explore Hyundai's award-winning manufacturing facility in Montgomery, Alabama".   The website also added, "You'll have several opportunities to get behind the wheel and see why your innovative Hyundai line-up is making our competitors very nervous. We've got new products to share, exciting new marketing initiatives and powerful sales strategies to help boost your profitability, and bold new plans to make sure the experience at your dealerships is in sync with the rising Hyundai brand."

The dealers are set to spend much of the day Tuesday touring the Hyundai manufacturing plant.

Dawn Hathcock, vice president of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce's Convention and Visitors Bureau, said few meetings have had such an impact on the community.  Hathcock is forecasting the dealers combined with Hyundai's advance team, which arrived last week, will use about 4,000 hotel room nights.  It is a big enough event that planners began contacting the Montgomery Regional Airport six months ago to ensure that the dealers and others could get in and out easily. Some airlines have added seats to Montgomery, and the airport is setting up to welcome the visitors.

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange, himself a former car dealer, predicted the economic impact of the meeting could reach $5 million or more.

Hyundai dealers will get their first official looks at the Sonata Hybrid and Sonata 2.0T turbo models at the convention. Those vehicles were introduced recently at the New York Auto Show. Many also will get their first look at the Equus, Hyundai's elite luxury model that will go on sale in the United States later this year.  According to the agenda, those models were shown to dealers at the opening ceremony at the convention center. Hyundai also will show concepts for future models to the dealers.

Hyundai dealers normally meet each year at a resort destination, and Hathcock said this might be Montgomery's only chance to make a good impression on the group. If it can do so, she thinks the city might get the convention again in the future.  "We would love to get it on an annual basis," she said. "It is up to us to show and shine."   Hathcock admitted it likely will be tough to draw the meeting on an annual basis, but she said Montgomery could be able to attract it on a regular basis if the meeting goes well.
